Record-breaking season at the Bay Oval

Tom Latham and Devon Conway Rewrote the ICC Record Book at the Bay Oval

ICC test records that will sit in cricket history forever were produced from just the sixth test match played at the Bay Oval at Mount Maunganui, against the West Indies in December 2025.

Twenty years after the Bay Oval was transformed from a scrub wasteland into an outstanding international cricket venue, two New Zealand batsmen rewrote the ICC test-match record book.

Black Caps Captain Tom Latham and South African-born Devon Conway were in uncharted territory in becoming the first opening batters to both score a century in each of the Black Caps' two innings.

Winding the story back, of the remarkable test where five innings produced three figure scores, New Zealand won the toss, and at the end of day one were 334 for the loss of Latham for 137.

Conway marched past the double century mark on day two before he was finally removed for 227. New Zealand declared in the last session of the day for 575/8, with the West Indies making a solid start, being 110 without loss at stumps.

The visitors batted through all three sessions on the third day's play and were still in contention after being bowled out for 420. Kavem Hodge was still there at the end of the West Indies knock, with an unbeaten 123.

New Zealand occupied much of the crease on day four, before declaring at 306 for the loss of just two wickets, which had cricket historians scurrying for their record books.

Latham had posted 101 runs with Conway dismissed for a neat one-hundred runs.

The accolades that began as a trickle flowed into a torrent with the Black Caps' declaration.

Devon Conway had become just the 10th batsman since the game began to belt a double century and a century in a test match.

Latham and Conway were the first opening pair to score a century in both innings in a test. Their combined 515 runs overall were a new record for an opening pair in test cricket. They also became the first pair to share a 300+ run and 100+ run partnership in a test match.

There were a myriad of other milestones broken in the match, including the highest partnership for any wicket at the ground, of 323 runs.

Black Cap quick, Jacob Duffy, added another mark to the grounds honours board, taking five wickets for 42 runs as the West Indies were bowled out for 138, to hand the home side a 323 run victory.

While expectations for an avalanche of runs and wickets were high, when Australia, England, West Indies and South Africa were announced as visitors to the Bay Oval in the 2025-26 season, few cricket fans would have forecast eight centuries and a five-wicket bag.

There couldn't have been a bigger opening to the 2025/26 Bay Oval season than Australia making their first appearance in the Western Bay of Plenty.

The three-game T20I series kicked off with Tim Robinson belting 106 not out in the New Zealand sides six wicket loss to the Aussies, in game one.

Game two was washed out before Mitch Marsh went back hard with an unbeaten 103 in the series decider, to give the Australians a two-nil series win.

Sandwiched between the Australian visit and the dramatic test match were England, who were in the country for three ODI fixtures.

The Black Caps set their side up for their white-wash of the visitors in the series, with a four-wicket win, with Harry Brook playing a dominant role in the England total of 223, with 135.
